Now for the fun part. Our sunscreen topic lays out the formulas side by side, so you can pick one you'll love wearing.

How we work it out

For your face we follow the American Academy of Dermatology: at least a teaspoon, about two finger-lengths. Everywhere else uses the 2 milligrams per square centimeter that sunscreens are tested with for their SPF, scaled to the areas you pick. A whole adult body comes to a little over an ounce, about a shot glass full.

The timeline follows the usual advice: put it on about 15 minutes before you head out, reapply at least every 2 hours, and reapply after swimming, sweating or toweling off, by the time your label gives.

General guidance for everyday use. Your sunscreen's label has the final word.
